FAQ:
What is a technical "tech" rehearsal?
A technical rehearsal is a mandatory rehearsal at the Barre Opera House that focuses on the technical aspects of a performance, including lighting, music cues, spacing, and transitions. Unlike a regular class or dress rehearsal, this is when dancers adjust to performing on stage, ensuring they are comfortable with the space, entrances, and exits.
what do i bring to a tech rehearsal?
Dancers should arrive for their technical rehearsal dressed in their regular class attire. Costumes should be brought to the theater and will remain there for the dress rehearsal and performances. Please also bring a labeled water bottle to stay hydrated. While no food or beverages (other than water) are allowed in the theater, dancers with multiple rehearsals in a day may want to bring a snack to eat in the lobby.
what time should we arrive for rehearsal?
Dancers should plan to arrive 10 minutes before their scheduled rehearsal time to allow time for parking, gathering belongings, and preparing for rehearsal. New this year - all tech rehearsals will be in full costume. Class photos will be taken in costume after the rehearsal. The set rehearsal time for your class is when dancers should be in the lobby, fully prepared to take instruction. Arriving early ensures a smooth and timely start, allowing us to make the most of our rehearsal time.
What if my dancer has more than one rehearsal in a day?
If your dancer has more than one rehearsal in a day, they are welcome to stay at the theater between rehearsals. Families with younger students may leave and come back if there is a long break between rehearsals. However, students under 12 may only leave the theater with adult permission or supervision. Students 13 and older may leave without an adult as long as they return in time for their next scheduled rehearsal.
what does "mandatory" mean?
When we say a technical rehearsal is mandatory, it means all dancers are required to attend. This is a crucial step in preparing for a performance, and missing it can impact not only the individual dancer but also the entire group.
why is it important that every dancer is present?
A performance is a team effort, and every dancer plays a crucial role in making it successful. The technical rehearsal is the only opportunity for dancers, teachers, and the production crew to work together before the show. During this time, we set formations, spacing, and transitions that rely on everyone being present. It also allows the lighting director to set lighting, learn cues, and familiarize themselves with the dances. If a dancer is missing, it can affect their group’s ability to practice accurately, forcing last-minute adjustments that may impact the final performance. When all dancers are present, the rehearsal runs smoothly, and everyone feels more prepared and confident for the show.
what happens if my dancer misses their tech rehearsal?
If a dancer misses their technical rehearsal, they may not be able to perform in the show. This is because the rehearsal ensures they are prepared for stage spacing, cues, and other essential elements that cannot be learned in class alone. If an unavoidable conflict arises, please email us as soon as possible to discuss options.
Why is my dancer's tech rehearsal on mother's day?
We understand that Mother’s Day is a special time for families, and we truly appreciate you spending part of your day with us for technical rehearsals. With the number of classes at our studio, scheduling all necessary rehearsals is a challenge, and unfortunately, holding tech rehearsals on Mother’s Day is unavoidable to ensure that every dancer has time on stage before the show. Many of our teachers and staff are also mothers, and we recognize how meaningful this day can be. Thank you for your flexibility, support, and dedication to your dancer’s performance experience. We appreciate you, and we hope your day is filled with love—whether you’re celebrating before or after rehearsal!
